Ontario Government To Improve Highway 60

Investment Will Benefit Drivers In The Barry's Bay Area

BARRY'S BAY, ON, July 18 /CNW/ - The Ontario government will repave and upgrade Highway 60 in the Township of Madawaska Valley as part of a total $26 million investment in the area, Transportation Minister Donna Cansfield announced today.

"Approximately 4,000 vehicles use this highway every day to travel for work, to transport commercial goods and to travel to tourist destinations such as Algonquin Park," said Cansfield. "Highway 60 is an important economic corridor as it connects the Huntsville area and Highway 11 in the west with
the Renfrew area and Highway 17 in the east."

Highway 60 will be repaved for a smoother drive from 7.1 kilometres east of the Renfrew County/District of Nipissing Boundary, easterly to the west limit of Barry's Bay.

<<
Other work includes:

  • Intersection improvements including left turn lanes and right turn tapers at selected intersections
  • New westbound truck climbing lane
  • Repaving of the Wilno/Shrine Hill Lookout Road
  • Repairing and repaving Barry's Bay Patrol Yard and Access Road (Olsheski Road).

>>
The Highway 60 improvement is part of a larger $26 million investment in the area that includes:

  • A recently completed highway repair contract on Highway 60 between Renfrew County/District of Nippissing Boundary easterly for 7.1 kilometres
  • The ongoing construction work on Highway 60 from Douglas to Eganville including the intersection at Kelly's Corners.

"We want to help move people and goods faster, create jobs and build a stronger economy," added Cansfield. "That is why the McGuinty government is investing in highways and transit across the province."

To help insure a strong economy and high quality of life for Ontario's families, this government is investing:

  • $3.4 billion over five-years in the Southern Ontario Highway Program, which will expand about 130 kilometres of highways, add or replace 64 bridges and repair about 1,600 kilometres of highways and 200 bridges over the next five years
  • $14.3 million in the multi-government $15.7 million Connecting Link program to give rural residents and business better access to major highways
  • More than $1.4 billion over five years from provincial gas tax funding into municipalities for new streetcars, buses and transit routes across Ontario
  • $1.8 billion over five years to make sure Northern Ontario highways are safe and efficient.
