Know Your Ice Conditions Before Venturing Out, Say Paramedics

Even though the calendar only just says that it is winter, some individuals may think that snow-covered ground equals enough ice to travel on.

Well, at this point of the season, this is usually not true, and even through the entire winter season, some areas of ice may never be safe to travel on with snowmobiles and ATVs.

"There has already been one death of a snowmobiler who is gone through the ice this season, as far as we know, and the paramedics of this province are hoping that there will not be any more", says Ron McMillan, Vice President of Administration of the Ontario Paramedic Association. "We understand that snowmobiling and using ATVs in the winter is a great form of recreation. We just asked that everyone who is considering riding over any ice, consult with local sources as to the ice conditions before venturing out. A little
preparation before leaving home or the cottage, can save a lot of pain and suffering later."

According to the tourism industry, winter recreational activities related to snowmobiling, accounts for up to $2 billion to the tourism economy provincially, and that speaks large as to the size of this form of recreation. The Paramedics of Ontario want our citizens to enjoy this wonderful season, but they also want them to do in safety.

Generally, ice is considered safe to walk across when there is 4 inches of solid blue ice, while it takes approximately 5 inches of solid blue ice for a single snowmobile to cross, according to the Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organizations website. For more than one snowmobile, or if the ice quality is not as favourable, then further ice thickness is required. It is also important to note that moving water can greatly change the safety factor of the ice, without warning.

So, the message that the Paramedics of Ontario would like to send to all snowmobilers is, 'Have fun, but sled smart. Know your ice conditions before venturing out.'

The Ontario Paramedic Association represents over 1700 paramedics from across the province. Our goals are to promote the highest standard of care for our patients and to promote the profession of Paramedicine.
