‘Tom Thomson View’ an Algonquin Bargain at $11.85 (includes GST)

Algonquin Park……….Fall 2008. While millionaires savour their recent purchases of Tom Thomson oil sketches, there is a bargain view from one of Thomson's locations used for the famous Canadian painting "Jack Pine". On the east side of Algonquin Provincial Park via the Sand Lake Gate entry point (at Achray Campground) one can stand at the site sketched by Thomson during his stay in 1916. Visitors can visit Thomson's cabin, and complete the short hike, to a location Thomson admired. This area was opened June 5, 2003 on the 110'th anniversary of Algonquin Park. One can see a ranger cabin and recently renovated interpretive centre in which the famous artist Tom Thomson stayed for a summer. Join Algonquin's park naturalists for a special interpretive hike celebrating the life of Tom Thomson. Retrace Thomson's footsteps along the new Jack Pine Trail to the very place where he sketched the famous Jack Pine painting.

Ron Taylor publisher of the ‘Ontario Travel North of Toronto’ website stumbled on this remarkable site while completing a circle road trip around the Algonquin Region.
“As a Tom Thomson fan, I was thrilled with the find. Now I have a photo of the location to go with my reproduction.”

The original “Jack Pine” is hanging in the National Gallery in Ottawa.

Taylor has assembled a grouping of accommodation member properties where visitors can stay in the Ottawa Valley, Barry’s Bay, Bancroft, area and easily make a day trip visit during spring, summer and fall vacations. Visitors wanting to complete a Circle road trip of the Algonquin region have many suggested routes with accommodation on the Ontario Travel North of Toronto website. Fall in Ontario is one of the most colourful seasons and was a Thomson favourite. http://www.400eleven.com/colour-report-algonquin-park.html

Taylor encourages every Canadian and international visitor to make this trip to view the inspiration that led to one of Canada’s most valuable creations in art history.

Achray Campground is located on the east side of Algonquin Park at the southeast end of Grand Lake. It is located 50 km from the Trans Canada Highway (Hwy. 17) near Pembroke and is accessed via Sand Lake Gate on the Barron Canyon Road (8 km paved road, 42 km gravel road).
