Sainte-Marie among the Hurons was Ontario’s first European community and is now a nationally significant historic site. Originally built in 1639, Sainte-Marie was the 17th century fortress and headquarters for the French Jesuit mission to the Huron people. The site’s history culminated in 1649 when a dramatic turn of events forced the missionaries to abandon and burn their home of nearly 10 years.

After extensive archaeological and historical research, Sainte-Marie among the Hurons now stands re-created on the original site where its compelling story is brought to life once again. Visitors can see the original stonework and tour the complex of 25 reconstructed heritage buildings, as well as enjoy the award-winning interpretative museum. In July and August, enjoy special presentations including 17th century firestarting, historic cooking, clothing and medicine, and native games and storytelling.
