Fall Color Predictions for Ontario 2010

When will the peak fall foliage arrive in 2010? This is often a question we are asked by visitors to our website, and the answer can vary depending on the location of the destination, the amount of rain, the first frost, the temperature of nearby bodies of water, and the fullness of the foliage on the trees. Just to confuse even more the vertical height of the area above sea level is also important. Predictions are just that---predictions based on forecasts. A little bit of art, and a little bit of science. See the Science of Fall Color Change. This year 2010 in Ontario saw less snow fall than usual which means less water in the water table and the existing snow melted early; however, the maple sap became "buddy" earlier, which means more sap flowed into the trees earlier. Last year 2009 was a spectacular fall colour and fall foliage season in Ontario. Book your fall getaways early!

Fall Foliage, Fall Colours or Autumn Colors?

What is the difference between fall foliage and fall colours or colors? We are really looking at the perception and familiarity of terms when differentiating between Americans and Canadians. This is especially true when we look at the spelling of color. Another important distinction is the notion of the “Leaf Peeper”, a term describing the tourists that flock to the North East New England area of the U.S. during the fall foliage season. Peepers tend to get arrested in Canada.

The British (English) prefer Autumn, as do many descendents of the United Empire Loyalists. However, Canadians being somewhat different than either the Brits or Yanks know the real “New England” is really Upper Canada, and the Province of Ontario. The dense hardwood forests of Maples, Oaks, and Birch are abundant and display some of the best fall colors and foliage in North America. Many would say the best colours in the world are in Ontario during the autumn season.

Fall Colour Drive Routes

Peak Color Season

There are a number of great road trips and fall colour drive tour opportunities in Ontario to provide for an exceptional vacation at the peak of the fall colour season. Trying to determine the peak colour is often elusive, as color changes rely on diminishing sun, and rely on a hard frost to initiate the most spectacular leaf color changes. We recommend a minimum of 2 days with an overnight or weekend stay at the many resorts, inns, hotels, and cottages, north of Toronto. Significant colour changes usually coincide with the official first day of Fall during the third week of September, on the 21, 22, or 23 day.

Maple Syrup and Fall Colors

There are many locations selling Maple Syrup, however it should be noted that Maple Syrup Production takes place in the spring before the leaves are on the maple trees, and not during the fall season.

Ontario’s Fall Classic “The Real Canadian Scenic Drive”

What better location to view the fall colours then between Lakefield north of Peterborough, to Bancroft, Maynooth, Combermere, and Barry’s Bay where you will drive through the hamlet of “Maple Leaf” Ontario. This is one of the historic towns and villages you will drive through on a scenic fall foliage color drive tour north of Toronto.

We recommend a minimum of 2 days with an overnight or weekend stay at the many resorts, inns, hotels, and cottages, north of Toronto. If your fall trip is flexible and you want to roam check the following roads north of Toronto, The Highway 11 Way, The 400 Highway North or The Highway 60 Way.
