During medieval times, pictorial calendars defined and evoked the tasks and pleasures ushered in by each month. One’s very existence was tied to the cycle of the seasons. For illiterate, agrarian societies, the recognizable depictions in such illuminated “books of hours” served to instruct and comfort those lives dependent on annual patterns.The internationally renowned Nova Scotia painter Alex Colville was fascinated by this ancient art form, yet felt himself alien to its presumption of a common lexicon of images. In 1974, he made twelve paintings of the months, each with a personal meaning. To learn more click here...

Powassan Maple Syrup Festival 
Powassan, ON  April 28, 2012 (North of Huntsville-South of North Bay) Events and attractions that will be back at the 2012 Festival will include sheep shearing, Scottish heavy events, horse-drawn wagon rides, sugar bush tours, a full-day of musical entertainment, craft and food vendors on Main Street.
