Discovery Harbour

Discovery Harbour Discovery Harbour

One of Ontario’s most picturesque historic sites, Discovery Harbour recalls the days of the 19th-century British navy and military that safeguarded the defence of Upper Canada. In 1820 the thriving naval dockyard boasted residences and workshops, large and small vessels, and a community of officers, artisans, sailors, and soldiers. The base was eventually operated by the British military from 1834 to 1856, constructing an impressive stone Officers’ Quarters that still stands today.

Now Discovery Harbour tells the story of the original 19th-century outpost and demonstrates a slice of life from this fascinating chapter in Canadian history. Summer features include daily guided tours of historic properties and costumed staff sharing the story of this historic naval and military community. Enjoy on-deck activities aboard the magnificent replica ships H.M.S. Bee and Tecumseth. See great shows at the on-location King’s Wharf Theatre and enjoy waterside dining at Captain Roberts’ Table restaurant. A beautiful nautical gift shop completes your visit.

Sainte-Marie among the Hurons

Sainte-Marie among the Hurons Sainte-Marie among the Hurons

Sainte-Marie among the Hurons was Ontario’s first European community and is now a nationally significant historic site. Originally built in 1639, Sainte-Marie was the 17th century fortress and headquarters for the French Jesuit mission to the Huron people. The site’s history culminated in 1649 when a dramatic turn of events forced the missionaries to abandon and burn their home of nearly 10 years.

After extensive archaeological and historical research, Sainte-Marie among the Hurons now stands re-created on the original site where its compelling story is brought to life once again. Visitors can see the original stonework and tour the complex of 25 reconstructed heritage buildings, as well as enjoy the award-winning interpretative museum. In July and August, enjoy special presentations including 17th century firestarting, historic cooking, clothing and medicine, and native games and storytelling. Children’s heritage activities feature quill pen making, candle making, and corn husk dolls. A beautiful gift shop and on-location restaurant are also part of the site complex.
